How to deal with flea bites on humans

Fleas can raid dogs, cats and other animals, and it is a fact that they can invade humans too. Flea bites on humans is one of the most common insect bites among others. Different species of fleas including cat fleas, human fleas and dog fleas can bite on humans and suck off their blood. The jaws of the fleas cut into the skin of humans, they release their saliva containing anticoagulants which stop blood from clotting, and harmful enzymes that cause most of the allergic reactions in most people including irritation, itching, pain and swelling. Prolonged exposure to fleas can lead to excessive loss of blood and eventually anaemia in humans.

Normally, flea bites on humans are seen around the ankles and lowers parts of the legs in the form of little small spots, causing irritation, itching, inflammation and sometimes pain. The reaction of each person to flea bites can differ from other depending on the person’s immunity and allergic conditions. These flea bites can last for a few hours and may extend for days, depending upon the person’s allergic reaction to it, which may cause only a little itching sensation in some people while excessive swelling and hives in others. Flea bites are more active in human children than in adults because children’s skin is very soft and sensitive.

Some of the good home remedies for fleas include immediately washing the affected part of the body with an antiseptic soap or a detergent. You can also place an ice-pack on the bites which will definitely reduce the swelling, inflammation and itching. Application of calamine lotion can also be effective in relieving itching, pain and inflammation. Hydrocortisone or any other gentle steroid cream can also be applied on the flea bite which will dramatically accelerate the reduction of swelling and itching.

One of the preventive measures to avoid fleas is to vacuum and clean the entire house, garden and lawn frequently. If your pet spends lot of time out of the home, then you need to regularly wash its bedding where it sleeps, carpet where it sits and other things that it frequently comes in contact. Getting rid of fleas is not a very easy task, it needs a well integrated plan which may take a lot of your money, time and energy. But it is worth it because ultimately you will proudly declare that your house is free from bites, and you have provided enough security to your home, your pet, yourself and your family members.
