Flea bites are the most common form of insect bites that are experienced not only by the animals but human beings as well. A hard, red, small and slightly raised spots are common sites that can be noticed after flea bites. Normally little or no swelling is witnessed at such itchy spots. There may be a little bleeding and that too when the affected area is badly scratched that may puncture the spot that has been created by fleas.

Flea bites normally occur on the ankle and legs area. There are different reactions of flea bites on different people. While some may not be affected much, others may be very sensitive and develop any infection or allergy. Though it is always better to keep your environment free from fleas by taking few precautions and measures to ensure cleanliness of your pet and home, but now that you have been bitten by the fleas it is necessary to treat it well and cure it as soon as possible.

The foremost thing to cure flea bite is to keep clean the area that has been affected and to wash it with antiseptic soap or lotion. Do not use warm water on the affected are as this may increase the itching all the more. Applying any cold pack on the bite can be of great help to decrease swelling. Scratching the infected area may stimulate all the more and take more time to cure, so it is better to avoid scratching.

However, if it doesn’t seem to get better and the affected area is still swollen and red, you can apply any mild steroid cream such as 1% hydrocortisone cream. These are usually easily available from any pharmacist shop without any prescription. Hydrocortisone is another that is very useful to reduce inflammation. Calamine lotion is another alternative that can be a solution to your problem.

Some of the flea bites may be quite intense. In such cases, one oral dose of any anti-histamine such as Chlortrimeton or Dimetapp can prove to be very helpful to get rid of itching. Once scratching and itching stops, the process of healing would also get faster.

Nevertheless, these things are sufficient to treat flea bites, but at times it may not be fine even after this. For such cases, it is always better to consult a physician and take a course of some steroids or antibiotics may have to be followed for a few days.
